Joel is holding a brick, a common weapon and means of distraction in the game. On the right-hand side at the start of GPU Jungle is a lower platform of a Bot dancing in an orange head with blue jorts. This references 1996’s Crash Bandicoot on the PS1, developed by Naughty Dog and often considered the PlayStation’s earliest mascot-type character. The dance is the Crash dance created for Japanese ads of the game (specifically the modified one from the N-Sane Trilogy on PS4), while the mask is Aku Aku, Crash’s protector. When you get to the first silver Bounce Pillow, use it to get on top of the wall, then drop off the other side.

So often that’s where magic in video games happens, and that’s most certainly the case here. On its own, this is a beautifully crafted, exquisitely paced and absolutely gorgeous 3D platformer. Combined with the hardware it’s bundled on, it’s something very special indeed – and one of the best launch titles I can remember in an age. Each bit of grain is felt through your hand, which makes it intense in the best way. Then, the magic starts happening when these features are combined. Take when you’re exiting the beach and you’re walking against the fans that are blowing sand across you.

Cross the controller cable bridge to the island with the strong wind, and then a second controller cable bridge. Directly ahead is an Astro Bot in Ape Escape cosplay hiding in a bush. Look over the edge of the island to see a blue aura in the clouds.
This references 2008’s LittleBigPlanet on PS3, developed by Media Molecule. The globe is LittleBigPlanet itself, covered in badges that represent levels from players around the world. When you first enter the rainy section of Gusty Gateway, far in the distance to the right is a giant bird harassing/helping a Bot with a giant feather. This is a reference to the infamous The Last Guardian which eventually released in 2016 and was made by Team Ico.
The Bot holding a feather refers to the game’s boxart, while the moment where he falls off and is saved by the bird references the E gameplay demo. At the Checkpoint overlooking the first mud pit, you’ll two a Bot with a Net looking for a Bot with a siren on its head hiding in a bush. This references 1999’s Ape Escape on PS1, made by SCE Japan Studio. Ape Escape is notable for being the first PlayStation game to require a Dual Analog/DualShock controller; you couldn’t play it using the launch gamepad.
Toro the cat filled the role to a degree in Japan but he never fronted any major games and has since faded from the limelight. But now there is TG88 com and while Astro isn’t much of a character his games are becoming some of the best in Sony’s line-up. In the first mud pit in Gusty Gateway, look in the right-hand corner for a skeleton swinging a sword around with a distinctive shield. The shield reveals that this is a reference to 1998’s MediEvil on PS1 by SCE Cambridge, about the knight Sir Daniel Fortesque being brought back to life so he can live up to his own falsified legacy. The PlayStation 5 Pro is the more powerful version of the original PlayStation 5, similar to the PlayStation 4 Pro. Its signature feature is a dedicated chip for intelligent upscaling of a game’s rendered image, letting them hit resolution targets at a fraction of the processing power, allowing for higher framerates. This was usually done via Sony’s proprietary PSSR technique (which stands for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution).
If you get it wrong, then you’ll need to scale the hill again, grab another bunch of bananas, and retry the dance minigame. If you’re successful, you’ll unlock the bot and get the “No Escape!
