Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 delivers an incredible story about heroes and villains grappling with loneliness. Spider-Man 2 feels like it’s right in the centre of Sony’s blockbuster sequel design philosophy. Where Horizon Forbidden West did the same thing but bigger, The Last of Us Part 2 elevated itself technologically, narratively, and most importantly, ambitiously. Spider-Man 2 falls between these approaches – it has some of Horizon’s safety, but with a slice of the elevation The Last of Us brought. Spider-Man 2 is the future of polished, competent, elevated sequels, and brings with it so many technical flourishes and a perfect execution of the formula that it stands in a class of its own.
For those uninitiated in the character, he’s essentially The Predator, an Apex hunter blessed with super strength who has chosen New York as his next hunting ground. It’s a great starting point that sends the city’s hero and villain dynamic into flux as he sets his sights on the biggest prey possible. Furthermore, both characters have distinct abilities, so it feels fresh to switch them up. Peter Parker’s symbiote black suit gives him unique abilities, while Miles places focus on his bio-electric skills. You can play as Peter and replay as Miles, each time enjoying a unique experience.
With the exosuit’s powers rapidly developing, Harry helps Peter rescue Tombstone while Mary Jane discovers that Kraven has kidnapped Connors. The trio attempt to save Connors, but Kraven forcibly turns him back into the Lizard, steals the serum needed to transform him back and mortally wounds Peter. Before Peter can die, the exosuit transfers itself from Harry to Peter’s body, saving him and becoming into Black Spider-Man. After Peter viciously defeats the Hunters with his newly enhanced powers, Kraven develops an interest in hunting Peter personally. While Spider-Man 3 hasn’t yet been confirmed by Insomniac, though there hasn’t been much news from the company lately, it would be strange for the successful series to not continue with another sequel.

Certain enemies are weak to different types of abilities, such as electric or symbiote attacks, which also adds an enjoyable extra wrinkle to fights. It’s by no means revolutionary stuff, but a welcome added level of complexity that makes you consider which powers – or even which Spider-Man – are best for a given job. Though hotfixes are flying thick and fast as I finish out this review, for me the patches have so far failed to tackle frequent crashes to desktop.
The choice is yours on how you want to use their specific powers to take on certain activities and crimes. And if the henchmen have been blessed with an upgrade, then you can expect something even more intimidating from the bosses. Between Kraven’s wily viciousness and the sheer overwhelming might of Lizard and Venom, there’s a level of brutality and strength from Spider-Man’s nemeses that you didn’t see in the previous games. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s map is far more expansive than its predecessor. In fact, it’s about twice as large, with new areas of New York City added in the sequel, including Brooklyn, Queens, and the East River. Easily jumping off the screen, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 allows players to take control of both Peter Parker and Miles Morales, freely switching between the two on the fly.

Peter, Mary Jane, and Harry visit Coney Island to reconnect; while there, the Hunters attack the park to capture a reformed Tombstone. While Peter rescues civilians, he is assisted by a super-powered Harry, who learns about Peter’s double life. Harry reveals that, on his father Norman Osborn’s insistence, he was cured by Curt Connors via a powerful organic exosuit that physically augments his body.
